Canada (LMIA)

A Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that an employer in Canada needs to obtain before hiring a foreign worker. The Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) assesses the impact of hiring a foreign worker on the Canadian job market. If the ESDC determines that the effect is positive or neutral, it grants a positive LMIA to the employer. A positive LMIA is sometimes called a confirmation letter. An LMIA can be valid for a maximum of six months, but it can also expire in less than six months in some cases.

Receiving a positive LMIA for an arranged employment offer does not allow a skilled foreign worker to automatically immigrate to Canada. For skilled foreign workers to become permanent residents, they must meet all the requirements under the Express Entry immigration process
